Not having access to the vast array of machines and weights at your disposal, specifically designed to ensure you have a good workout, can be frustrating when trying to stay fit. However there are plenty of ways to exercise at home and make the most of your local area (whilst following government guidelines, of course).
Utilise your own bodyweight. Your own weight can be used in a variety of ways to train all muscle groups you would normally use free weights or machines for. You just have to be a little creative or follow a bodyweight exercise plan. Push ups, squats and sit ups are your typical examples, however there are far more interesting and varied exercises out there.
If you are used to doing cardio at the gym, simply step outside and use the natural environment. Incline sprints or walks on a treadmill are designed to mimic a hill, so get out and make the most of your nearest with a few short hill sprints. These will do wonders for your health. Improving explosive power, endurance and encouraging weight loss.
Get creative with household items. A rucksack filled with books or other similar relatively heavy items can be worn to make all bodyweight exercises that bit tougher. You can complete squats, burpees, lunges amongst many others! A kitchen counter corner is perfect for bodyweight dips and a sofa can be used for elevated glute bridges or hamstring marches.
Inexpensive equipment such as resistance bands or a door mounted pull up bar can replicate many exercises you would complete in the gym. Resistance bands are so versatile that any cable-based exercise can be completed at home and even add more emphasis on different parts of the strength curve.
I would emphasise that you should treat a home workout the same as a gym one. By that I mean, follow your normal routine, wear your gym clothes, eat correctly before and after and listen to your favourite motivational music. It’s too easy to try and do a little bit whilst watching tv for example and getting distracted. Make sure you remain dedicated to what you are trying to achieve and most importantly follow a plan!
