So you’ve had ten too many pigs in blankets and overindulged in the Baileys over Christmas and New Year – not all is lost however! With a bit of determination, you can bring yourself back to your pre-Christmas self or beyond, if that’s what you want to achieve. Here are some of my top tips for getting back into shape after the festive season.
· Water. Keeping hydrated is one of the best ways you can look after your body. As well as keeping your energy levels and ensuring your body is functioning as it should, water will also help to give your liver a much needed detox if (like me) you drank quite a bit over the holidays. Herbal teas are also a great way if you don’t enjoy water by itself.
· It’s easy when you have loads of leftover Christmas food to continue the party, but try and incorporate vegetables, healthy fats like eggs, nuts and avocados into your diet and not go crazy on the carbs especially if you're still slowly working your way through another box of Quality Street! Stick to low GI carbs where possible such as lentils, grainy breads and porridge.
· Get out and about. Breathe that fresh air, perfect if you’ve been stuck inside playing board games for days. Go for a walk and if you’re feeling brave, why not try and jog or pop to your local pool. Every small step helps when it comes to regaining your fitness levels. Maybe consider getting off the bus or train a stop early and walking a little further every day for a week or parking further away from work.
· Get a personal trainer. As well as giving you motivation, a PT will be able to look at things subjectively, helping encourage you to do things you might have been avoiding and be best placed to give you the advice you need. Personal trainers don't have to cost the earth, have you ever considered an online trainer? A full months plan can cost as little as a single face to face session with a ton of added benefits. Why not check out my online training page for more info.
